The rupiah weakened 0.14% to 14,320 per dollar at the start of the week, with a sharp intraday drop on fears over the Omicron variant. Shortly after, US President Biden said lockdowns would not be needed, and Fed Chair Powell warned Omicron could slow US growth and complicate the inflation outlook.
The rupiah was expected to recover on the day.
Omicron-driven risk aversion strengthens the dollar and pressures emerging-market currencies, raising import costs for Indonesian feed makers, while slower growth expectations weigh on energy and commodity demand.
