Mexican activists are pushing to ban GMO corn imports, which Mexico buys about 16 million tons of each year, mostly from the US. A 2020 presidential decree seeks to bar GMO corn from human consumption by 2024, and the Supreme Court has affirmed a ban on growing it.
A push to restrict GMO corn imports would threaten US corn exports to Mexico, which are worth about $2.7 billion a year. For now it is advocacy with no enacted import restriction, so the price effect is modest.
