The U.S. and Canada questioned Mexico's agricultural biotechnology approval process at the second USMCA Free Trade Commission meeting. USTR Katherine Tai cited Cofepris's failure to resolve any biotech applications since May 2018, and Canada raised similar concerns.
Both governments called for science-based, transparent approval procedures.
Pressure to clear Mexico's biotech backlog could eventually ease restrictions on U.S. GM corn and feed ingredients, but no near-term change in import flows is evident, so the price effect is limited.
