About 1.4 million Argentines bought dollars on the formal market in July, up nearly 60% from June, as political turmoil and inflation at a three-decade high eroded confidence. Black-market dollars traded at 292 pesos versus about 253 pesos at the official rate including taxes.
Heavy dollar demand and a wide parallel exchange gap signal persistent peso weakness and capital flight. This can encourage farmers to hold grain for a better rate, which tightens Argentine export supply and supports meal and oil prices.
