The yen fell more than 1% against the dollar after the Bank of Japan kept ultra-low interest rates while other major central banks tightened. Governor Kuroda said Japan was nowhere near raising rates.
The Federal Reserve was expected to raise rates by 75 basis points at its Nov. 1-2 meeting.
The gap between US and Japanese rates keeps pressure on the yen and supports a stronger dollar. This raises the local-currency cost of dollar-priced grain and meal imports for Japan.
