The Canadian dollar fell on Wednesday after stronger-than-expected U.S. retail sales raised the prospect of more Federal Reserve rate hikes. Canadian home sales fell 3% in January and housing starts dropped 13%, while U.S. crude settled down 0.6% at $78.59 a barrel.
A stronger U.S. dollar tends to pressure U.S. crude and dollar-priced commodities, while a weaker loonie can make Canadian grain and oilseed exports more competitive. The main driver is U.S. interest rate expectations.
