The USDA Risk Management Agency has made irrigated grain sorghum insurable through a modification to the ARPI program, effective for the 2023 crop year. Coverage applies in select counties in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, using irrigated corn as a proxy crop.
Better insurance coverage for irrigated sorghum may encourage producers to keep acreage in the crop, supporting future supply. The effect on prices is limited in the near term because the change mainly affects risk management.
