India recorded its lowest August rainfall since at least 1901, 36% below normal, with June-August rainfall 10% below average. The government has already restricted wheat and rice exports and imposed stockpile limits, and further export curbs are considered likely as El Niño threatens September rains.
A weak monsoon raises the risk of lower Indian rice, sugar and soybean output and more export curbs, which would tighten global grain and oilseed supplies and lift prices.
