The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition released a report finding that at least $142 billion was distributed to farmers through the farm safety net from 2017 to 2022. That total includes $46 billion in crop insurance premium subsidies, $29 billion in commodity payments and $67 billion in ad-hoc disaster aid.
The report argues these programs are unsustainable and unequally distributed.
Pressure to cut crop insurance and commodity subsidies could change future production incentives for row crops. Any near-term price effect is minimal, since the proposals remain debate-stage.
