The US agreed to keep ports open to Mexican livestock imports after Mexico agreed to remove restrictions and duties that hindered New World screwworm eradication efforts. The USDA had threatened to ban live cattle imports from April 30 if those barriers remained.
Mexican cattle imports totaled 1.25 million head in 2024, about 4% of US slaughter.
Continued feeder cattle imports ease pressure on an already tight US beef supply, limiting upside for cattle prices. A port closure would have tightened supply and supported prices.
