The US Army Corps of Engineers St. Louis District is monitoring rising Mississippi and Illinois river levels after heavy upstream rain. Tows that normally move 45-60 barges are restricted to 25 barges at a 9-foot depth, and officials expect water to rise further but say significant disruptions are not expected yet.
Barge restrictions at St. Louis tighten river capacity during harvest-period shipping, supporting barge freight rates and raising transport costs for corn and soybean movements down the Mississippi.
