India has re-imposed a stock-holding limit on wheat with immediate effect, which had lapsed in March 2024. Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said there is no wheat shortage and no proposal to lift the wheat export ban or the rice export curbs.
Stock limits are meant to curb hoarding and cool domestic prices, which reduces Indian demand pressure in the short term. The government's signal that exports stay banned keeps wheat supply out of the world market.
