Researchers at the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT warn of food insecurity in Latin America after one of the strongest El Niño events on record. Drought in 2023 exposed more than 800,000 rural people in Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela, and reduced harvests are expected to keep food insecurity high into late 2024 and 2025.
Lower regional output of rice, beans and corn raises import demand in Latin America. The effect on global prices is limited for now, but it supports regional feed and food grain demand.
