New world screwworm has been detected in Panama, Costa Rica and now Nicaragua, threatening Belize's cattle industry, which is valued at $90 million. Belize has been free of the pest since 1992 and its cattle trade with Mexico could face restrictions if an outbreak occurs.
Belize's agriculture minister has called for urgent action from international organizations.
