HPAI has depopulated about 73.4 million US layer hens across 57 flocks since February 2022, according to USDA APHIS data. The 2022 outbreak was the most severe, while 2024 has already seen about 17.2 million layers lost through July.
Sustained layer losses tighten egg supply and support high egg prices, which reduces the number of hens consuming feed. This is a background demand drag for corn and soymeal used in layer rations.
