Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller argues that federal spending on screwworm is premature and that closing the border to livestock and animal products would create a crisis. He cites the sterile fly program that eradicated the pest in the US decades ago.
If the border stays closed, cattle supply stays tight and consumer meat prices may rise, though this view does not itself change policy.
