China retaliated against US tariffs with a 34% levy on top of existing duties, bringing its tariff on US beef to 56%. Japan and South Korea also face 24% and 25% tariffs.
China was the third-largest US beef export market over the past four years, and cattle futures fell sharply in response.
Losing a major export outlet for US beef reduces packer demand for cattle and pressures live and feeder cattle prices, while the tariffs also cut into the feed-related export chain.
