US and Mexican governments agreed to step up joint efforts to contain a screwworm outbreak in southern Mexico. Secretary Rollins had threatened to close the border to livestock and animal commodity imports, and she requested permission for preventive measures such as aerial releases of sterile flies.
Mexico supplies over a million cattle a year, so the agreement lowers the risk of a border closure that would tighten US feeder supply.
