Basis bids for corn and soybeans shipped by barge to the US Gulf were steady and export premiums firmed on Monday. Low water on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers kept barge prices higher, and river gauges at Cairo and New Madrid were below their low thresholds with Memphis forecast to follow.
Low river levels raise barge freight and delay loadings, which widens the cost of moving US grain to export positions and supports Gulf basis and export premiums.
