Saskatchewan farmers welcome China's March 1 tariff cuts on canola seed and meal, which dropped the seed rate to 14.9%. However, urea prices have jumped since February 27 as shipping slowed near the Strait of Hormuz during the Iran war.
Higher fuel and fertilizer costs now offset part of the canola gain.
Lower Chinese tariffs support canola meal and seed demand, while higher urea costs raise farm input expenses and could curb future acreage or crop input use. The net effect is supportive for canola but tightens farm margins.
