The rand weakened to about 16.40 per dollar on September 28 as Brent crude rose toward $108 a barrel and gold fell more than 3% to about $4,150 an ounce. Expectations of further US rate increases also supported the dollar.
Higher crude and a weaker rand raise South Africa's import costs, and the stronger dollar tends to tighten global commodity financing, which pressures feed importers.
