The EU Joint Research Centre reports that an exceptionally hot, dry summer in western and central Europe accelerated crop development and cut grain and maize size and numbers. In the worst-hit areas, some crops failed completely, and falling grassland and fodder availability is adding pressure on livestock farming.
Lower European grain and forage output raises feed costs and import needs, supporting corn and wheat prices and feed demand for livestock.
