USDA data show 414 flocks in 39 US states have been hit by avian influenza since February, with over 40 million birds affected, mostly commercial turkeys and chickens. Nearly 2.7 million birds were killed in recent flocks.
The outbreak has returned to the Midwest earlier than expected.
Losses among commercial turkey and chicken flocks reduce meat supply and can lower feed demand, while the early return raises the risk of further culls.
