The USDA plans to expand bird flu testing of beef from dairy cows sent to slaughter. Nearly 200 herds in 13 states have been infected since March, and a May sample test found virus in one cow's tissue.
Expanded testing could tighten controls on cattle slaughter and add uncertainty about dairy-origin beef supply. The effect on live cattle prices is likely limited unless positive findings increase.
