Saskatchewan research at four sites found that cutting oat nitrogen rates by 15 percent was economical in 2023, a dry season. Most growers apply about 90 pounds per acre of nitrogen, and the trials were supported by SaskOats.
Lower fertilizer input costs can improve grower margins and may shift acreage decisions, but the benefit depends on weather, so the effect on oat supply and prices is limited.
