USDA hatchery data show US broiler egg sets and chick placements running above last year, but poultry slaughter has not risen at the same pace. Bird weights are down about 1 percent from 2016 at 6.13 pounds live weight, moderating from last year's spike.
Lighter birds hold back meat output even as chick placements grow, which keeps chicken supply tighter than hatchery numbers imply. That supports chicken prices and modestly reduces demand for feed grains per unit of output.
