A new Transport & Environment report says a free trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur could undermine Europe's move away from unsustainable transport biofuels. It warns that removing trade barriers could increase imports of Argentine soy biodiesel if sustainability safeguards are absent.
The report cites Canada's earlier lobbying during CETA talks.
Lower trade barriers could bring more soy-based biodiesel into the EU, which would support soy oil demand. The effect depends on future trade deal terms.
