A research note reports that India exported 0.72 lakh tonnes of wheat in April-May 2017, down from 1.09 lakh tonnes a year earlier, while imports rose to 2.18 lakh tonnes from zero. The analyst expects 2-3 million tonnes of imports in 2017-18 and lower exports because Indian prices are above those of other major exporters.
A swing from exporter to importer adds demand to the global wheat market, which is supportive for world wheat prices.
