Legislators and industry groups toured Lock and Dam 15 at Rock Island during an early August Mississippi River barge tour organized by Illinois and Iowa corn grower associations. The Waterways Council warned that about 80% of locks will exceed their design life within three years and that funding for maintenance is lacking.
Deteriorating locks raise the risk of delays and closures on the river system that carries over 60% of US agricultural exports, which could widen barge freight costs and basis for corn and soybeans.
