Low river levels and a partial Ohio River closure are slowing grain barge traffic, and spot barge rates for export grain rose 27 to 50 percent in a week according to USDA. Grain handlers are cutting basis, and the market is paying a premium to store corn until December.
Higher barge rates and wider basis reduce the net price farmers receive and push buyers toward storage or later delivery, while the closures tighten nearby cash supply.
