India's government asked rice millers to register with its plant protection agency so that Chinese authorities can approve them for exports. A phytosanitary protocol between India's Agriculture Ministry and China's customs administration is being finalized.
India currently ships only a small share of China's rice imports, which come mainly from Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan.
Access for Indian mills to China, the largest rice importer, would add export demand and could firm Asian rice prices. The effect is modest until registrations and the protocol are finalized.
