The US Trade Representative's chief agricultural negotiator told Congress that India's market price support for rice and wheat is far above WTO limits, estimating support at 74 to 84 percent of rice production value and 60 to 69 percent for wheat between 2010 and 2014. He warned that all rice and wheat producers should be concerned about the trade effects.
The dispute over Indian subsidies pressures India's rice and wheat export competitiveness and could lead to WTO action, but it does not directly change near-term supply or prices.
