Smartkarma research by Prasenjit Basu says the Vietnamese dong has depreciated only 2.8 percent year to date, outperforming Asian peers such as the yuan, rupee and rupiah. Vietnam's exports grew 15.4 percent in January to September 2018, widening the trade surplus to $5.39 billion, with a forecast of $8 billion for the full year.
A strong dong and trade surplus support Vietnam's import capacity for feed grains and meals. The analysis is a currency and trade view with little direct effect on commodity prices.
