USDA says it is raising surveillance at the US border with Customs and Border Protection to keep African swine fever out of the country. A detector dog recently intercepted a roasted pig head in luggage at Atlanta's airport.
USDA is also planning its response and expanding testing capacity at National Animal Health Laboratory Network labs.
The steps are precautionary and do not reflect any US case, so they have little immediate price effect. They do signal that an ASF detection in the US would be a serious risk to hog prices and export access.
