A report on the political economy of rice trade among India, Bangladesh and Nepal was released. It finds that India alone has a rice surplus while Bangladesh and Nepal depend on imports, and that high agricultural tariffs in those two countries reduce import competitiveness.
Import dependence in Bangladesh and Nepal, combined with their tariff barriers, shapes regional demand for Indian rice. Changes to those tariffs would shift trade flows and regional rice prices.
