Vietnam's Department of Crop Production directed rice planting calendars in the 13-province Mekong River Delta to be adjusted ahead of a forecast mild El Niño from March to May 2019. About 600,000 hectares were planted early to avoid salinity intrusion, which hit production in the 2015-2016 event.
Earlier planting and calendar changes reduce the risk of a major salinity-driven rice loss in Vietnam, a key exporter, which eases upward pressure on Asian rice prices.
