The rupiah weakened 0.24% to Rp14,078 per US dollar on April 22, 2019, as the post-election 'Jokowi effect' faded. Brent crude rose above 2% to about $73 to $74 after reports that the US would push Iranian oil buyers to stop purchases.
Higher crude raises Indonesia's import bill and current account risk, which pressures the rupiah and raises the cost of imported feed. The Iran sanctions story is also supportive for crude and related energy costs.
