FAO's GIEWS update says El Niño conditions are likely to persist from May to July, overlapping with planting of Central America's main-season maize. The dry season was drier than usual, and white maize prices are already high.
Dry weather during planting could reduce Central American maize output and raise import demand, supporting prices for white maize and yellow corn imports. The effect on world prices is small given the regional scale.
