Texas now has the largest cow herd in the US, estimated at about 94 million head including dairy cattle. Texas A&M extension specialist Joe Paschal says heifer entries into feedyards are slowly rising, suggesting the high-number phase of the production cycle is nearing its end.
Rebuilding of heifers signals tighter future cattle supplies, which should support prices over the next couple of years. Retail beef prices are expected to lag the cycle.
