A CARE Ratings report warns that weak monsoon rains have slowed kharif sowing of rice, food grains, oilseeds and pulses, with only about 303.7 lakh hectares of the 704.5 lakh hectare target planted. Retail food inflation hit a 13-month high in June, and wholesale food inflation was near 7%.
Delayed sowing and lower expected output of rice and food grains point to tighter Indian supplies, which could support domestic grain prices and raise import demand.
