The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry is studying a suggested retail price for imported rice because retail prices have not fallen as expected. Well-milled rice was selling up to P45 per kilo, and the DA is reviewing traders suspected of manipulating the release of imported stocks.
Palay farmgate prices have dropped to as low as P7 per kilo.
A government price cap or intervention could alter import flows and retail margins for rice and rice bran. Importers holding back stock suggest supply to the market may tighten or be released abruptly.
