USDA NASS data show 18% of US corn was mature as of September 15, 21 points behind the five-year average of 39%. Corn condition held at 55% good-to-excellent, the lowest for this time of year since 2013.
The first harvest estimate was 4% complete.
The lagging maturity keeps the risk of frost damage and lower yields in play, which supports corn prices. Buyers should watch for a shift in weather before the crop matures.
