A USDA-ERS outlook says beef production will be reduced for 2019 because of lower slaughter following the Tyson Holcomb, Kansas plant fire. Tyson redirected cattle to other plants, and beef plants are expected to add Saturday slaughter to offset lost capacity.
Lower beef output supports boxed beef and fed cattle prices, and the reduced slaughter capacity keeps packer margins elevated. The fire's lingering effects remain a key supply factor for cattle markets.
