China announced it will stop stockpiling corn and begin selling down its large reserves, which hold more than half of the world's corn stocks. The USDA estimates US farmers may plant more corn this summer than in years, adding to supply concerns.
The US Grains Council said it was surprised by the timing and will monitor the impact.
Chinese reserve sales add export-competing supply to a market already seen as oversupplied, which is bearish for world corn prices. Buyers should expect softer corn costs unless Chinese demand offsets the release.
