Indiana's spring Farm Bureau survey found the cost of a 16-item market basket fell to $52.61 from about $53.32 in September. The decline was driven mainly by lower egg prices after avian flu wiped out poultry flocks across the Midwest.
Egg prices are tied to layer flock size, and a recovery in egg prices reflects tighter supply after flock losses, which supports demand for feed used by layers. Prices may remain volatile as the worst of the flu impact appears to pass.
