Glacier MarketsFarm's Bruce Burnett says a large Canadian oat crop is expected to create a surplus of milling-quality oats. Oats are the exception among Western Canadian crops, since the acreage is large, the crop is performing well, and Canada dominates North American production and consumption.
Markets for oats are limited, with a finite food market, a stagnant horsefeed market and a residual feedgrains market.
A surplus in a market with limited outlets points to lower oat prices for the new crop. Feed buyers can expect softer oat values, while other large Canadian crops are not expected to move prices much.
