BIMCO reports that Q2 2020 agricultural dry-bulk exports rebounded strongly from a weak first quarter, with combined US, Argentine and Brazilian volumes reaching 148.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2020. Panamax and Handymax freight rates rose from about $5,000 per day to $10,000-13,000 per day by August 26, driven largely by South American soybean exports to Asia.
Higher grain freight rates increase delivered costs for feed ingredients moving by sea and shift trade flows toward nearby origins. The rebound in South American soybean shipments also signals heavy competition for Asian demand.
