USDA's September Hogs and Pigs report put the US swine herd at 79.099 million head, up 0.7% from a year earlier and above trade expectations. The report showed the heavyweight inventory groups were larger than expected, while lightweight groups were smaller.
Lean hog futures closed higher the day after the release.
