The European Parliament's environment committee adopted a report calling on the Commission to create binding EU rules halting EU-driven global deforestation, by 45 votes to 11 with 25 abstentions. The report proposes mandatory due diligence, reporting and penalties for companies placing forest-risk commodities on the EU market.
Mandatory EU deforestation rules could eventually restrict imports of soy, palm oil, beef and other feed-relevant commodities, adding compliance costs and traceability requirements. The impact on prices is long-term and uncertain at this stage.
