Mexico is holding up import permits for GMO corn, according to the head of the National Farm Council, even though the planned ban is not due to take effect for three years. At least eight GMO corn permits are among hundreds awaiting decisions.
The U.S. exports roughly 16 million tonnes of mostly GMO yellow corn to Mexico each year.
Delayed permits effectively bring forward a ban on a major U.S. feed corn outlet, which would weigh on U.S. corn export demand and prices if shipments slow.
